On the day Aaron Judge goes for 62 home runs, we celebrate the 61st anniversary of 61.
On this day on 1961, Roger Maris stepped in against the Red Sox and drilled his 61st home run, passing Babe Ruth for what eventually would be declared as the new MLB home run record. The blast came against the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium, where Maris finally heard a chorus of cheers and took a curtain call after months of criticism simply for not being Ruth or Mickey Mantle.
Now, Maris’ home run record, still an American League record (though he now shares it with Judge), is widely celebrated, but Judge may be in line to take sole possession of that record with a home run one what would be the 61st anniversary of 61, in 1961.
Kind of eerie, right?
