Initial investigation suggests that Christian Yemga's Hyundai Sonata struck the guardrail and became disabled, Massachusetts State Police said.

Yemga then left his car and started walking on the highway where he was hit by an Acura RSX between Exits 13 and 12 around 2:30 a.m., police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

After Yemga was hit, a Volkswagen Atlas hit that car while it was stopped, police said. The two people in the stopped car, a 35-year-old man and one passenger, sustained serious injuries and were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The driver of the Volkswagen person, identified as Nikitia Wilkins, age 33, of Brockton, who struck the stopped car was determined to be driving under the influence and was arrested, police said.

Wilkins was charged with OUI-alcohol, resisting arrest, and assault and battery on a police officer, police added. She refused medical attention at the scene.

The incident closed all southbound lanes of I-93 between Exits 12 and 14 for several hours as a result. The northbound lanes were also closed for a short time, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
