An Iowa City woman was taken into custody after allegedly striking her grandchild.

According to police, two independent witnesses called 911 Thursday morning to report that they observed 55-year-old Dorothy Golden of the Town and Campus Apartments hitting a three-year-old in a stroller near the intersection of South Gilbert Street and Kirkwood Boulevard.

Upon contact, Golden stated that she was the boy’s grandmother, and he ran from her towards the street. She allegedly admitted to grabbing the boy by the clothes, but denied striking the child.

The two witnesses, who are unknown to Golden, reported that they saw her strike the boy between 3 and 5 times. The child reportedly was screaming and crying during the assault.

Golden was taken into custody and charged with Child Endangerment, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a jail term of up to two years if convicted.

Judge Deborah Minot issued a no-contact order on Friday.
