Resident helps families escape apartment fire in southeast Houston; 12 units destroyed, HFD says

HOUSTON – Twelve units were destroyed after an apartment fire broke out at a southeast Houston apartment complex Saturday morning, according to officials with Houston Fire Department.

It happened in the 1200 block of Redford Street near Gulf Freeway shortly before 5:30 a.m.

According to Houston police, part of a roof caved in from the second floor.

One resident, Amire Procter, suffered minor cuts after breaking through his neighbor’s windows, alerting them about the fire.

“The firefighters weren’t here yet, so I got up and knocked on each door and there was no answer,” he said. “Then I broke into the windows and told people ‘There’s a fire. get out!’”

Proctor said he saw the fire spread sideways from unit to unit.

“It got worse as it [spread],” he added. “It looked like nothing was happening at first and now the fire is at the other side.”

No additional injuries were reported at the fire.

It is unknown at this time how many families were displaced. The Red Cross is assisting families at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
