After the resignation of its band director, Logan High School found itself without a band to play at the homecoming game this year.
Community members stepped in to make sure the music wasn't sidelined.
Austin Campbell, the makeshift director of this alumni band, said someone had the idea and he decided to run with it.
"It's a labor of love. It's a passion project," Campbell told Eyewitness News. "No one asked me to do it or anything."
Campbell said he started making phone calls, sending messages and posting on social media. Word spread and former band kids of all ages stepped up to help.
Debbie Mendez, a Logan County Board of Education member, described the group as "doctors to judges to a little bit of everything is out there. Young kids, kids who have already graduated and moved on."
Campbell said it's about supporting other band members and showing everybody just how meaningful the band program is. One student in the band is in his senior year and was honored Friday night with a medal before the game.
"It can be a great place for people who otherwise wouldn’t have a home," Campbell said about the importance of high school band. "Not even just that, it’s a place where people grow, develop and flourish. They become the best version of themselves."
The band had the full support of the Board of Education, the county superintendent and Logan High School's principal. Even the Logan Mayor Serafino Nolletti assisted the efforts. Local company Stereo Video Unlimited made sweatshirts on a tight deadline for all the band members, so they had matching clothes to wear.
Don Elkins, former band director at Logan High School from 1962-1969, said he had no doubt community members could come together, but he is impressed by how they rushed against the clock.
"You ask (the Logan community) to do something, and they ask you when and where and what can I do," Elkins said. "That’s all you can ask. It’s a great place to be from.”
The Logan Board of Education said that it could take years to get the band program back, but has no doubt that it will come together again.
"It will be great again - maybe even better than before,” Mendez said.
Logan won the homecoming contest, defeating Nitro 17-6.
