Suspect in Custody Accused of Murdering a Father and Son

HAYWARD — A man suspected of murdering a father and son is in custody and faces 16 charges. The victims were stabbed to death inside a residence on the 100 block of Lund Avenue.

Police received a 911 call September 25 shortly before 4:30 a.m., concerning an altercation inside the residence. Officers who responded found two bloodied and unconscious victims inside.

The victims were a 49-year-old man Rigoberto Lopez and his 22-year-old son Rigoberto Hernandez. Paramedics administered first aid to the victims, but they were pronounced dead at the scene.

Six hours later, officers apprehended a suspect about two miles away from the crime scene. Oscar J. Arevalo-Baquiax, 21, of Hayward was arrested near Li’l Angels Child Care Center at 28924 Ruus Road.

Arevalo-Baquiax was held temporarily at the Hayward Police Detention Facility, before being transported to Santa Rita Jail in Dublin. He was booked for the double murder at the county jail on September 26 at 4:10 a.m.

On September 27, Arevalo-Baquiax was charged for the multiple murder and use of a deadly weapon. The suspect also faces 14 other related charges and special allegations for what happened to the two victims.
