The I-10 Widening West Project started mid-year and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) announced a new update for the project.
TxDOT spokesperson Jennifer Wright said contractors are working on the bridges to add a third lane. She explained several steps have already been completed for this process.
She said the next step is to add bridge beams that will sustain upcoming bridges.
There's 19 bridges, it’s going to take a lot of beams to fulfill. But of course, it’s going to be dozens and dozens of beams coming in and then the beams will support the deck, the bridge deck and the roadway. So that's how you make a road and we're again in four months' time. There's been an awful lot of work being done on this project,” said Wright.
Wright said roadways are now ready to be paved. She added that the plan already in place has given drivers access to two lanes, but drivers will need to prepare for next month's closures.
“The next big closures we're going to see are coming up mid-October when we bring in the beams because we'll have to have full closures of those eastbound lanes of I-10 so that we can unload beams over the course of several nights,” said Wright.
The project will widen I-10 from Mesa to Vinton Road, add safety lighting, bypass lanes and reversal ramps, Wright said.
An overpass will also be built at Los Mochis and so will a turnaround between Transmountain Road and Vinton Road.
We're very happy with the pace of this three-and-a-half-year project so far,” said Wright.
