SAN DIEGO — Amtrak and Metrolink have suspended train service between San Diego County and Orange County.

Heavy rains from Tropical Storm Kay destabilized the cliffs along the Pacific Ocean in San Clemente, according to Amtrak.

Metrolink says they are working alongside specialists until they “have confirmation from the experts the slope movement has stopped” in the San Clemente area.

Amtrak says its Pacific Surfliner train will not operate between Irvine and San Diego, while Metrolink says it has suspended Orange County Line and Inland Empire-Orange County Line service between its Laguna Niguel-Mission Viejo station and Oceanside.

Amtrak says it’s working to set up train service between Oceanside and San Diego, and to offer alternative travel options such as a bus route between Irvine and Oceanside.

The closures are effective starting Friday and will be in place until further notice.

Coaster service remains unaffected. Freight trains will slowly pass the problem sections in limited runs.

“This corridor is the second-busiest corridor in the country, and for Amtrak not to be able to run all the way down to San Diego has a huge effect in terms of people’s mobility,” North County Transit Board Member Dave Drukker told FOX 5 Friday.

Drukker says San Clemente has similar rail issues to Del Mar: tracks exposed to the elements and water on the rise.

“Obviously the train needs to get away from the ocean. It’s not going to get better,” Drukker added.
