Folks in Alabama have been known to buy Halloween costumes for their furry friends, dressing their dogs and cats as hot dogs, bumblebees, dragons, unicorns, tacos, witches, sharks and more.

The most important thing, of course, is to make sure any cute costume is safe and comfortable for your pet, even if Fluffy or Fido is only wearing it to pose for photos.

There are plenty of places to buy Halloween costumes for pets, along with trends on which ones are scooped up most by shoppers. Walmart, for example, says the most popular costumes at its stores this year are likely to be the cow, bumblebee and ladybug.

“Food costumes continue to be on trend this year, hot dog is a classic and Walmart’s new sushi costume is a fun twist,” Gabriela Dobson, Walmart’s senior merchant for pets, said in a press release.

In 2021, a bumblebee costume was the most popular for pets at Walmart stores in Alabama, the release said. Shoppers at the retail chain in 19 other states -- including Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia -- also preferred the bumblebee last year.

Another top seller in 2021 -- at Walmart stores in states that range from Florida to California -- was a dragon costume. Results for all states were based on point-of-sale units at Walmart, the release said.

No information was provided on how the animals felt about their Halloween outfits, or how long it took for costumed cats to give their owners major stink-eye.
