Attempted robbery: Brookpark Road
An unidentified male suspect tried to rob a 42-year-old Cleveland man of a laptop and nearly $20,000 in cash at knifepoint Sept. 19 on Brookpark near West 130th Street.
The incident was reported at about 6 p.m. The victim had been driving behind the attacker, who stopped his car, stepped out and walked to the victim’s car. The victim escaped the robbery attempt by simply driving away.
Police said the man was carrying so much cash because he was an employer in the process of paying his employees. Detectives are investigating.
Suspicious person, aggravated menacing, attempted theft: Glenway Drive
A Glenway man called police at about 5:15 a.m. Sept. 8 after he stopped two unidentified male suspects from searching through his vehicle, which was parked outside his apartment building.
The man awoke to the sound of the suspects rummaging through his car. He looked out his window and shouted at them, telling them he was calling police.
The suspects threatened to “shoot up” his house. They then jumped into two separate vehicles and drove away.
Nothing was missing from the man’s car. Police checked the area, but didn’t find the suspects.
Theft by deception: Sandfield Drive
A Sandfield woman told police Sept. 17 that she had lost $3,000 through a Facebook scam.
The woman said she was having some sort of trouble with Facebook Marketplace. She searched for and found a phone number for Facebook on the internet, but the number was fake.
The woman called the number and spoke to a “senior manager,” who tricked her into opening PayPal and Zelle accounts. The woman also allowed the fake Facebook manager to gain remote access to her computer. She was on the phone with the scammer for three-and-a-half hours.
Later that day, the woman checked her Fifth Third bank accounts and realized that $3,000 had been withdrawn. The next day, she went to the bank, closed her accounts and opened new ones. The bank was able to recover $423.
The scammer then called the woman and asked her to log onto her computer. She refused. The scammer said he wanted to withdraw all the money from her bank accounts so that he could recover the $3,000. The woman hung up.
Disorderly conduct: Smith Road
A Brook Park man, 61, was arrested at about 10 a.m. Sept. 15 after police found him passed out, intoxicated and unable to care for himself outside Shell, 5918 Smith.
The man was taken to a local hospital. He was wanted in another city. Further details about this report were unavailable.
Breaking & entering, theft: Smith Road
A safe containing $3,000 was reported stolen at about 6 p.m. Sept. 14 from Brook Bark Dog Grooming, 5155 Smith. Someone had forced open the business’ rear door to gain entry.
Shoplifting: Snow Road
A Cleveland Heights man, 41, was arrested at about 2:30 p.m. Sept. 20 after he stole more than $250 in groceries from Giant Eagle, 14650 Snow.
A Giant Eagle security guard saw it happen and stopped him. The man had placed groceries in his backpack and tried to leave the store without paying.
Police found a green vegetable-like substance they believed was marijuana on the man.
Operating a vehicle under the influence: Snow Road
A Lakewood man, 28, was arrested at about 2:30 a.m. Sept. 20 after he drove his SUV over a tree lawn on Snow near Delores Boulevard.
The man had just left Solid Gold Lounge on Snow. When driving on the tree lawn, the man nearly hit a utility pole with his SUV.
The man told police he had consumed three beers. He failed field sobriety tests.
Operating a vehicle under the influence: Smith Road
A Brunswick man, 30, was arrested at about 3 a.m. Sept. 19 after police caught him driving drunk on Smith at Remora Boulevard.
Police had stopped the man’s car because he was driving 40 mph in a 25 mph zone. Also, he changed lanes without signaling.
The man said he had just left the Crazy Horse strip club on Brookpark Road and had consumed three beers there. He failed field sobriety tests.
Theft: Engle Road
A 50-year-old man took about $180 in DVDs and Blu-ray discs Sept. 19 from the Brook Park branch library, 6155 Engle, without checking out the material.
The theft was reported at about 4:30 p.m. Library workers said the man checked out six DVDs and two Blu-ray discs, but did not check out at least five more Blu-ray discs and four DVDs that he kept hidden.
Theft: Snow Road
A drill set was reported stolen at about 12:30 p.m. Sept. 19 from the permanently closed Brookview Elementary School, 14105 Snow. Someone broke the rear door to get inside.
