A second man has been charged in a shooting that took place near a car dealership in Canton in August.
Kevon Duffus, 30, of Covington, was initially arrested Aug. 30 and charged with shooting a man at the Shottenkirk Hyundai on Liberty Boulevard in Canton.
The man who was shot, Uriah Tyrek James, 24, of Douglasville, has since been arrested and is now in Cherokee County custody on charges related to the shooting.
According to Canton Police, officers responded to the Hyundai dealership Aug. 10 in reference to gunshots being fired. Police found James, who appeared to have a gunshot wound to his leg, and a female who was unharmed inside a vehicle parked on Liberty Boulevard.
Investigators determined James had been in an argument with Duffus at the original dispatch location, when gunshots were fired. James was treated at a local hospital, police said.
In Duffus’ arrest warrant, Canton police say he shot at James’ vehicle multiple times, including one bullet that struck him in the leg. Authorities reported the vehicle was also damaged with bullet holes.
Duffus was arrested that day and booked in to the Cherokee County jail.
James was arrested Sept. 22 in Cobb County, and was transferred to Cherokee County custody Tuesday, according to the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office.
According to James’ arrest warrant filed by Canton Police, he grabbed a rifle from his truck, cocked it and pointed it at Duffus, when a witness reported the gun “did not go off due to possible jamming.” Police said a round was found with a mark on it, indicating an attempted shot.
A spokesperson for Canton Police declined to answer a question about further details about the shooting, saying the incident remains under investigation.
James is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, according to his arrest warrant.
Duffus is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during commission of a felony, and criminal damage to property, per his warrant.
As of Friday afternoon, both men remained at the Cherokee County jail without bond, said Capt. Jay Baker, Cherokee Sheriff’s Office spokesperson.
The involved parties were not employees or customers of the dealership.
