Student drivers get a new perspective

let's face it, every day we all hit the road, there is *** chance something could go wrong. And nowadays with so many distractions in the age of cellphones that risk has gone up the cell phones have taken the place of D. W. I. S. For the cause of accidents and fatalities in our country. Trooper. First class Richard Dupont is trying to combat that problem through education as supervise for drivers and programs. I look at my position as *** gateway between the state of new Hampshire and the driving schools like thin blue line driving school here in Wyndham where students learn the rules of the road and how to drive. But on this day these young drivers to be are heading outside for some unusual training brought in by state police and the new Hampshire liquor Commission's Division of enforcement and licensing, they're gonna put on the, the buzz goggles or the drunk goggles, there's *** lot of nicknames for it and then they're gonna put you through field sobriety, you know, good luck. The students put on goggles that we create the feel of being drunk behind the wheel to demonstrate just how hard operating *** car can be simply avoiding the cones wasn't easy right there. Next up on the course, 15 year old Anderson Petrie so far so good. It started off okay and then uh like your vision is just, it's just, it's not the same scott Rogers runs the school here. Yeah, so *** lot of cones got hit today. Hopefully it's eye opening to these teens, the potential risk if you do consume alcohol and or drugs *** combination and get behind the wheel just like *** real police stop *** trooper, then takes the kids through *** field sobriety test, watch how hard it is to follow basic commands and balance with the so called drunk goggles. Neither did driving student David throw 2 3. I felt like my leg was at least *** couple of feet away from my other leg. These students are also entering *** driving world with more safety technology built into their cars. But the instructors want them to know while this is *** good thing, you still need to use good old fashioned driving techniques, backup cameras, Everybody's using backup cameras to back into parallel park now and it's pretty effective, but they're forgetting to look over their shoulders to help make the kids more aware of their visibility on the roadways, especially around big commercial trucks. The state runs something called the teens and trucks program. They actually bring in *** semi truck to *** driving school like here at thin blue line and this gave the teens *** first hand look at what it's like to be sitting in the cab of *** large tractor trailer. These young drivers get to see and hear about *** truck driver's view of the road and they talk to you guys about when you're changing lanes that you want to see both headlights, especially of *** truck in your rear view mirror. We get cut off *** lot long time walmart. Truck driver Mark Lanier talks to the kids about the challenges of seeing cars around him. These are £80,000 and if you come over and you're in *** £3000 car, you're not going to win. Each student climbs into the cab to see if they can spot the vehicles around the truck once you shut that door, you knew all the cars were there before you shut the door, then you sit down and all those cars are gone. *** perspective. Many kids never had definitely have *** lot more respect for people driving those kinds of vehicles because it can definitely be more difficult than I'm driving in the car. The hope is the students will use this new knowledge and be better, more aware drivers, john Marasco head of the state D. M. V says this kind of lesson has *** ripple effect on the roads they will lead and other people will follow and when people go by and they see somebody in the right hand lane that's obeying the speed limit. That's using the directional, that's not following too close, that's doing things the right way. Um, what that ultimately does is that starts getting other people to think about their driving behavior. There is *** trickle down effect. If it saves just one life that makes *** huge difference. Well, if I summed it up in one word safety and if everybody's driving safe on the roadways, then we're all going to be safe.

Student drivers get a new perspective

Tonight, young drivers in NH get a different perspective. From simulated drunk driving to a view from a semi, it's all in an effort to keep drivers safe. Plus, some folks in Chester shed their inhibitions and some of their clothes to pose for a unique calendar. It was all for a great cause and as Jean Mackin shows us, lots of laughs, and even some inspiration.
