ELGIN, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Elgin police are warning residents about a crew of burglars posing as utility workers.

They’ve burglarized seven homes, targeting elderly homeowners, according to police, and were unsuccessful at least two other times since the first of the year.

A community alert said it’s typically two to four people, who wear reflective construction vests and hard hats.

Each incident has occurred in the afternoon or early evening.

They try to lure the homeowner outside to discuss a utility project or other construction work and while the person is distracted, others go inside looking for valuables.

Police advise people to notify them if someone comes knocking and claims to be a utility worker and they say if they’re persistent, close and lock the door and immediately call 911.
