The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to Chief Bobby Martin:

This morning shortly after 4 Master Officer J. Melvin was dispatched to the area of Julian’s Beach Bingo in the 1100 block of Julian R. Allsbrook Highway near Big Lots and Harbor Freight after receiving an alarm call.

Melvin noticed a hole in the front door and what appeared to be flames inside the building.

The officer also noticed that an empty building front was damaged as well. There were no signs of anyone gaining entry into the building.

A Molotov cocktail was thrown into the beach bingo building.

The Roanoke Rapids Fire Department assisted with the fire, which Martin said came from the cocktail, and officers entered the building to ensure no one was inside and nothing was missing. Officers learned the suspect may have been wearing a black shirt, black pants and appeared to have a mask on.

Martin said it is not clear why a beach bingo establishment would be the target of a Molotov cocktail. “This individual had no respect for someone’s property and the hard work they put into establishing this business. This individual decided to not only throw a Molotov cocktail but several bricks.”

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the police department at 252-533-2810 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.

On Thursday at around 9 p.m. Melvin responded to Dunham’s on a shoplifting call.

Melvin learned a man later identified as 63-year-old Edward Brace was in the store cutting security sensors off merchandise in an attempt to steal items.

He walked out of the store when confronted by employees.

Lt. J. Baggett  located Brace behind NC Works and found he was in possession of several crack pipes and a razor blade.

Brace was charged with attempted felony larceny, possession of drug paraphernalia, and carrying a concealed weapon.

He received a $4,000 bond and Tuesday court date.

Thursday shortly before 11:30 p.m. Sergeant D. Newsome responded to a disturbance at Hux’s Billiards.

Newsome was told two men – Thomas Moody, 36, and Jason Ivory, 26, both of Roanoke Rapids – were involved in a fight. They were asked to leave but refused to do so.

Ivory left per officer instructions but Moody refused. He was charged with trespassing and resist, delay, and obstruct. Ivory, who returned to the business, was charged with trespassing.

They were released on written promises to appear in court on October 7.

Baggett, J. Wind, and N. Powell assisted.

On Thursday shortly before 11:45 p.m. Powell responded to a call about a person attempting to break into a dumpster owned by Big Lots.

The dumpster contained damaged goods and the caller said they believed two people were still in the area.

Powell encountered Brian Vick, 28, and Shannon Tadlock, 46, both of the Roanoke Rapids area.

Vick was charged with felony breaking and entering and conspiracy. He  received a $5,000 bond and October 7 court date.

Tadlock, who Martin said served as a lookout, was charged with felony conspiracy and signed a written promise to appear in court on October 7.

No mugshot of Tadlock was available.

Baggett assisted.
