Alabama rap artist Chika is in some powerful company in an upcoming Hulu documentary series, sharing screen time with women such as Oprah Winfrey, U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley, actress/writer/producer Issa Rae, singer Chloe Bailey and many more.
“The Hair Tales,” launching Oct. 22, is a six-part series that offers “an honest and layered look into the complex culture of Black hair and, ultimately, Black women’s identity, beauty, cultural and social contributions and humanity.”
To what extent it will feature Chika remains to be seen, though she’s glimpsed talking about social stigma in the trailer. “We really are beautiful,” she says. “But it’s like, how much could we explore of ourselves if we didn’t have to take so much time unlearning what we were taught?”
According to information provided by Hulu, the series isn’t just a parade of celebrities: Featured guests include “brilliant scholars, industry and cultural leaders, hair professionals and influential contributors including Esi Eggleston Bracey, Dr. Noliwe Rooks, Mickalene Thomas and Meshell Ndegeocello.”
Chika, who’s from Montgomery, rose to national notice with her debut EP “Industry Games” in 2020. In social media posts she has told fans a new album is in the works, though she has expressed frustration with delays in the production.
