The Empress is the latest Netflix release to transport us to another era, but this time, we’re not going quite as far back as Bridgerton. The steamy historical drama follows the life of Elisabeth, the Empress of Austria, whose reign lasted from 1854-1898.
The series, which is described by Netflix’s Tudum fan site as “the story of Bavarian princess turned Austrian empress Elisabeth, affectionately known as Sisi, who struggled to adjust to life in the stifling 1800s Habsburg royal court,” stars Devrim Lingnau as the titular ruler, and also features Philip Froissant as her husband, Franz Joseph.
The Empress just dropped on Netflix yesterday (Sept. 29), but it’s already garnering plenty of buzz. Decider’s Joel Keller praised the show’s pilot in his Empress review, writing, “Like most costume dramas, The Empress takes its first episode to ramp up the story, when all the ceremony and politeness can give way to rivalries, acrimony and lots of sexy times. The first episode definitely crawls but sets up a story with a lot of intriguing possibilities.”
With such a successful start, we can’t help but wonder what lies in The Empress‘ future. Will there be a second season? When will more episodes of The Empress premiere? Here’s everything you need to know.
Will there be a Season 2 of The Empress?
Right now, it’s a little too early to make a firm call on what’s in store for The Empress. Netflix has not released any plans for a second season just yet, but that’s hardly cause for alarm, considering the show only premiered a day ago.
Still, we can look at past shows on Netflix for clues as to when The Empress could potentially be renewed for Season 2. The streamer has previously renewed hit shows for a second season not long after they’ve premiered. Bridgerton, for example, was renewed in January 2021, about a month after Season 1 dropped on Netflix in December 2020.
