Man dies, suspect arrested in Hazelwood shooting

PORTLAND, Ore. (KPTV) - A man died at the hospital, and a suspect was arrested later Friday after a shooting in Portland’s Hazelwood neighborhood.

According to a police statement, officers from the East Precinct were alerted to gunfire in the 200 block of Southeast 148th Avenue at 2:14 a.m. Friday. Officers on scene said they learned that a man had been driven by a private vehicle to a hospital a short while afterward. Together with officers from the Central Precinct, East officers responded and launched an investigation. They discovered a crime scene at the scene of the original call, and they came to the conclusion that the incident was connected to the gunshot call.

The man who was shot, 37-year-old Dusty Baker, of Vancouver, Washington was taken to the hospital with critical injuries. Police said he later passed away.

Homicide detectives continued to investigate the case. On Friday night, they arrested 31-year-old Stephen Toelle of Portland in Happy Valley. He was taken to the Multnomah County Jail on the following charges:

  • Second-degree murder warrant
  • Second-degree attempted murder
  • Unlawful Use of a Weapon
  • Felon in Possession of a Firearm

PPB said the Special Emergency Response Team, Crisis Negotiation Team, Narcotics and Organized Crime, Focused Intervention Team, Air Support Unit, Forensic Evidence, Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office and the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office all assisted in the arrest.
