SOUTH BEND — The South Bend Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit is investigating a Wednesday night homicide off South Michigan Street that left one resident dead.

Christopher Yakim, 37, was killed in a shooting around 9 p.m. Wednesday night in the 2100 block of South Michigan Street, police said. Officials did not say what may have caused the shooting, only that units responded to the area when gunfire was reported.

Responding officers found Yakim bleeding from a gunshot wound and rushed him to the hospital, where he later died, police said. Police department logs indicate Yakim lived near where he was shot.

An autopsy for Yakim is scheduled for Friday at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. Police ask anyone with information on the incident to call the South Bend Police Department or Michiana Crime Stoppers at 574-288-STOP.
