The biggest question for USC coming into this season was how would they make the puzzle pieces fit? The hiring of Lincoln Riley and their use of the transfer portal meant there would be a lot of fresh faces in Southern California this year. That also meant they would need to gel quickly to get the Trojan offense going early. Running back Travis Dye believes he and his teammates have come a long way in that department.

Dye spoke about the chemistry of the USC offense during media after practice on Wednesday. He said their constant time spent together has made it easy for them all to become friends and grow into a family.

“We’re always together,” said Dye. “We’re always eating and doing all that stuff off the field. Guys are in class with each other. It’s not just that we’re always around. We’re not just a group of guys. We’re actually a group of friends, a group of family.”

Even with plenty of new pieces in several key spots, the USC offense has found its groove early. The Trojans are averaging 42.2 points per game during their 4-0 start to the season. They only put up 17 on the road last week against Oregon State but, besides that, they’ve scored 40 plus in each of their other contests.

Dye sees that production as the payoff to their hard work to come together during the offseason. They all feel comfortable enough with one another now that they know that they will all have each other’s backs.

“It was hard. It was a long road to get to that point,” Dye said. “But we’re at that point where we can all trust each other to do our jobs and to be there for each other. It’s huge.”

So many new, moving pieces meant it would’ve been okay had Riley’s offense not taken immediate effect at USC. However, the offense has taken it upon themselves to ensure there was no drop-off from Norman to Los Angeles. Dye and his teammates have done just that and it has paid dividends in their early season results in 2022.
