Trump threatened to access reporter’s phone records to find leakers: Book

.

Former President Donald Trump internally threatened to gain access to a prominent New York Times reporter’s phone records in order to identify possible leakers inside the White House, according to a forthcoming book.

Throughout his presidency, Trump would consistently rant about stories written by Maggie Haberman, a reporter for the outlet who closely followed the Trump administration, according to her book Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America. Haberman quickly became a thorn in Trump’s side, with the former president referring to every negative story about him in the Times as a “Maggie story” regardless of who wrote it.

“Trump, angry about my published stories, would bellow that he wanted administration officials to obtain my phone records and identify my sources,” Haberman wrote. “It did not appear that anyone ever acted on it.”

The previously unreported details are shared in Haberman’s book that describes Trump’s legacy as a businessman before elevating himself to the presidency in 2016. The book also offers a glimpse inside the sometimes chaotic nature of the White House under Trump’s administration.

Trump has repeatedly rejected Haberman’s reporting in public, releasing a statement in February in response to Confidence Man that she “knows nothing about me.” A spokesperson for the former president also rejected the idea Trump threatened to unveil her anonymous sources.

“While coastal elites obsess over boring books chock-full of anonymously-sourced mistruths, America is a nation in decline,” spokesman Taylor Budowich told Axios. “President Trump is focused on Saving America, and there’s nothing the Fake News can do about it.”

Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America is scheduled to release on Tuesday.
