33-year-old woman walking on I-94 hit, killed after leaving adult care facility in southwest Michigan

VAN BUREN COUNTY (WWJ) - Police said a woman walking along the freeway in southwest Michigan was fatally struck by a vehicle early Thursday morning.

According to Michigan State Police, the deadly crash occurred around 5:45 a.m. in Paw Paw Township. Troopers said a driver traveling westbound on I-94 hit the woman who was said to be walking in the left lane of the freeway.

She died at the scene, troopers said. He name was not immediately released.

After an initial investigation, local authorities discovered the 33-year-old victim was a patient at an adult care facility in Decatur -- she was reported to have walked away from the assisted living home.

While the crash remains under investigation, police said the driver involved was strapped in with a seat belt.

It is currently unknown if drugs or alcohol are factors in the crash.

The westbound lanes of I-94 were forced to closed for two hours as emergency responders responded to the crash.
