Almost exactly seven years after he took over as host of The Daily Show, Trevor Noah has announced that he will be leaving Comedy Central‘s long-running late-night program.
Noah made the announcement during the taping of tonight’s show, to his studio audience. (Watch video above.)
Noah shared during Thursday’s taping that when recently reflecting on his seven-year anniversary with the show, “One of the overriding feelings I found myself experiencing… was a feeling of gratitude… There are so many people who make this thing come together, and I want to say thank you to the audience for an amazing seven years. It’s been wild. I remember when we first started, so many people didn’t believe in us. It was a crazy bet to make. I still think it was a crazy choice… What a journey it’s been.”
“It’s something that I never expected,” he continued, “and I found myself thinking throughout the time, everything we’ve gone through — the Trump presidency, the pandemic, just the journey, the more pandemic…. And I realized that after these seven years, my time is up. But in the most beautiful way, honestly. I’ve loved hosting the show. It’s been one of my greatest challenges. It’s been one of my greatest joys. I’ve loved trying to figure out how to make people laugh even when the stories are particularly s–tty on the worst days. We’ve laughed together, we’ve cried together. But after seven years, I feel like it’s time.”
In closing, Noah said, “I’m really grateful to a network who believed in this random comedian nobody knew on this side of the world… I never dreamed that I would be here. I sort of felt like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I came in for a tour of what the previous show was, and then the next thing I knew, I was handed the keys. I couldn’t have done it without [the audience], and I wouldn’t have wanted to do it without you.”
The Daily Show premiered in July 1997, and was hosted by Craig Kilborn for the first two-and-a-half years of its existence. Jon Stewart took the reins in January 1999, and lorded over the late-night program for 16-and-a-half years.
Noah made his debut as host on Sept. 28, 2015.
Noah’s exit certainly does not help late-night TV’s fast-withering diversity issue. Following the conscious uncoupling of Showtime’s Desus & Mero and the unceremonious axing of TBS’ Full Frontal With Samantha Bee, the late-night landscape was down to just four non-“white male” hosts — Noah, Amber Ruffin, Charlamagne Tha God and Ziwe. And the latter two are both awaiting renewal decisions.
The Daily Show in its various incarnations is the longest-running program on Comedy Central, and to date has won 24 Primetime Emmy Awards.
Will you miss Noah, after he tapes his final show (date TBD)? And do you fear this could be the end of The Daily Show altogether?
I’ll miss him!
Me, too! Intelligent and funny, thought-provoking host – and GREAT interviewer. (Oh, and magnetic on the screen which doesn’t hurt.) I wish him the best and will be looking for what he does next, but this hurts a little, to be honest. :(
Trevor noah has a great energy to him and because of that energy, i never took him as someone who would do the daily show for 10-20 years. so this doesnt surprise me. Loved what he did and will continue to be a fan!
Agree. He’s so talented her should be allowed to move on and do what he wants. Was just grateful to have his voice nightly for as long as we did.
Maybe they’ll bring back Samantha Bee…
Hopefully!!!
Maybe they’ll bring back Jon Stewart! He was the best.
I was secretly hoping that this is the opening for Jon Stewart to come back and help right the boat of this counrty. We need his voice and influence
Jon Stewart is still under contract with Apple TV. The second season of his show “The Problem” with Jon Stewart starts next week.
That was my first thought, now that she’s a casualty of the Warner-Discovery implosion.
Truthfully I thought she would have been a better choice than Trevor in the first place.
Of course we all would rather see Jon Stewart come back, but he probably couldn’t get out of his Apple deal, and might not want to do a nightly show anymore.
If I remember correctly she jumped ship a half season before Stewart left her and John oliver
I will really miss him. He’s clever, funny and always on point. Bummer Trevor!
I love you Trevor Noah and I really love the way you think. I hope to see more of you in the future.
Comedy Central should rehire Samantha Bee
It would be awesome if Sam or Hasan Minaj came back.
I like Hasan, he would be great.
Did you ever see his show on netflix? It was fabulous.
Wouldn’t hurt.
I so enjoyed watching Trevor. Funny, expressive and on-point. I will miss laughing at his wonderful humor.

I have a real good feeling that we’ll be seeing Trevor Noah again… The Late Late Show with Trevor Noah. 2023 on CBS.
Time to have Samantha Bee take the reins. 7 years late, but about damn time.
Thank God. He is a horrible person
I agree. He’s another nonsensical activist.
Sorry he flies over your head.
How is he a horrible person? Or did you mean to post that comment under another article?
Finally, he can go back to South Africa and call out ALL THE HORRIBLE stuff happening there to people of all colours/creeds/religions/sex/sexuality etc instead of saying how bad USA is. Talk about going for the easy pickings in USA, he is sooooooo “brave and edgy” NOT!
I hope you didn’t procreate
We can only pray.
Hey Cindy & This guy…good luck with that intolerance. It’s Zac’s opinion…but yeah…he’s the jerk right?
AMEN!
Next time u say “AMEN” make sure you do basic facts before hand
I hope you prayer for all the victims of S.A.
NOAHA LIVES in gated community where he lives with mostly white only folks
so next time u comment, MAKE SURE u know basic facts
What the h*ll are you talking about? Who cares where he lives? What difference does that make? You think he should live in the slums because he’s black? Not racist much, are you?
I hope u read the news
What kind of nationalist nonsense is this? Why do you get to point out horrible stuff happening in countries you aren’t from but Trevor Noah can’t? I swear, Americans like you are part of the reason this place is falling apart.
No kidding!
He was too smug and never really funny!
Do you like John Stewart?
Or maybe Greg Gutfeld??
Then why did you watch him?
Trevor Noah is one of the brightest minds and kindest people in television. I will miss hearing him share his insightful understanding of difficult issues that our country has had to face during most of the years he spent hostingThe Daily Show. We’ve had the Trump presidency, and along with it the increase in racial prejudice, threats to democracy and the loss of honesty and decency at all levels of society. Even though we’ve all had a pandemic to deal with, Trevor has been able, at the end of each weekday evening, to make it all more bearable for us through his brilliant comedy and his positive attitude during life’s challenges. Thank you Trevor. Please don’t go too gar.
Must be fun ur reality. In what world has their been a increase in racial prejudice? We have worked so hard since the 60s. We arent back there
If is obvious you !I’ve in a delusional state of mind
“In what world has their [sic] been a [sic] increase in racial prejudice?” Are you serious? Do you not listen to the news at all? Oh, right, you probably only watch Fox News, OAN, Newsmax, and other right-wing channels. My God, the stupidity …
I’m really going to miss Trevor. He wasn’t afraid to call Trump to task and many other issues. I really liked his comedic personality. Going to miss you Trevor. Enjoy the rest of your endeavors.

Are you a hateful bigot professionally, or just for fun?
Rhetorical question, I don’t care because your opinions mean less than nothing.
Trevor never quite won me over after Jon Stewart left, so I haven’t watched the Daily Show in years. Good luck to him, though.
It was about time Trev. You were becoming unrecognizable I must say. I had stopped watching the Daily Show. The authentic you was swallowed by something very unsightly.
He took a show with 1.5 million viewers and drove it down to 350k. Are we sure he wasn’t deservedly fired? They’re quite transparently letting him save face by saying he’s the one who’s quitting.
In fairness ratings across the board for every network show have nosedived in the last 7 years due to a myriad of issues. For Comedy Central 350K is still a good number in 2022 so there is no chance he was fired.
Nice cope. Guttfeld gets 2.2 million viewers on FoxNews at 11pm, beating Colbert, Fallon, and Kimmel. That’s not exactly ratings nose diving across the board.
Bunch of old people falling asleep in front of their TVs with FoxNews on hardly counts as “viewers”. :)
Nice try. Guttfeld’s Demo rating for 18-49s is higher than that of the Daily Show. Every day.
And check FoxNews ratings in that timeslot from 7 years ago and they were a lot higher than 2.2 million. Ratings are down everywhere, nothing to do with content and more to do with very few eyeballs on live TV anymore whatever the network. We all watch on demand on our own schedule and for a lot of people under 25 they don’t watch what we would call regular programming at all, just YouTube and TikTok content.
OK. I checked. Guttfeld’s ratings in 2022 at 11pm are a little less than O’Reilly’s from 2015 at 8pm. Try again.
Hasan Minaj or Jessica Williams would be great replacement hosts.
Good riddance.
Same to you, hateful person.
Mr. Noah’s view of the world, and the takes therein, were refreshing and thoughtful. I kept yelling “NOOOOOO” as I heard him last night.
I will miss Trevor. He always gave me a different perspective on world events whether I agreed with him or not . He was one of the few voices that did not kowtow to Trump/Maga. Several of those voices have moved on. It makes me wonder how we will fight Teumpism now.
NOOOOOOO….. I need my moment of ZEN.
First James Corden, now Trevor Noah??
I agree with some of the comments. Trevor really was a good interviewer. He was genuinely interested, asked intelligent questions. It seemed like he actually read/watched/researched whatever the guests were there to talk about.
If John Oliver quits, the world will become a very dark place.
Trevor Noah can be funny at times, but for the most part he focuses on what the “right” is doing, and does nothing to improve race relations with his platform. His commentary is very divisive, and makes white people the scapegoat of all problems. I pray he has continued success, but wish anyone with a platform to make a difference would actually do so. Ugh!
I’m glad the writers brought up the diversity issue. The producers should really stop thinking so small. Why can’t they celebrate by having an amputee, or maybe someone with chronic halitosis. Have they sent any scouts to Papua New Guinea?
