(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Former Gov. Jim Edgar rarely endorses candidates anymore. But he’s making an exception for the Republican lawmaker running for secretary of state.
He told a crowded room at a campaign office Thursday that Dan Brady, R-Bloomington, stands the best chance among GOP members seeking statewide office in November.
Conspicuous by their absence: any of the other statewide Republicans. With reporters afterward, Edgar said little about gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey, a state senator from Xenia, who seeks to oust incumbent Democrat JB Pritzker.
Pressed how he’ll vote, Republican Edgar said, “It’s a secret ballot.”
Edgar praised Brady’s ability to work with others, as well as his organizational skills. Brady defeated fellow Republican John Milhiser handily in the state’s June primary.
Democrats control state government, but Edgar, who also served as secretary of state, said one-party rule is bad for everyone because there is less of a checks-and-balances system.
Edgar also said over the years, Republicans have moved to the right, while Democrats have moved to the left.
Brady is running against Democrat Alexi Giannoulias, a former state treasurer.
