Oklahoma City police community in mourning after officer killed in crash while off duty

An overnight crash has left Oklahoma City police and the community heartbroken.
Sgt. Meagan Burke was driving home from work around 12:30 a.m. Thursday in the northbound lanes of Interstate 44 near Southwest 44th Street when a southbound car crossed the median and hit her vehicle head-on. Burke was pronounced dead at the scene.

"When we arrived, we learned that one of the involved drivers was one of our officers," Capt. Valerie Littlejohn said.
An investigation is underway, and those in blue mourn the loss of a fellow officer.
Burke was 31 years old and joined the Oklahoma City Police Department in May 2016.
The department posted body camera video from July of Burke taking a man into custody for arson and knocking on doors to save families from a burning apartment. Authorities said the video shows "just how committed she was to being an officer protecting our community."

Oklahoma City police took a moment to remember Burke, her life, legacy and service to the city. Sky 5 flew over a procession Thursday afternoon as officers escorted Burke's body from the Medical Examiner's Office to a funeral home.
The Oklahoma City Fraternal Order of Police said Burke was a young, enthusiastic professional and a great representative of our younger generation of officers.
