SAGINAW, MI— The Saginaw Community Alliance for the People (CAP) is holding a public meeting to discuss work being done on the Saginaw master plan, upcoming zoning proposals and other communication tools residents can use to be more informed on how their local government works.
Running from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, September 29, at New Life Baptist Ministry, 1401 Janes Street.
Organizers and CAP co-founders Carly Hammond and Jeffrey Bulls say the gathering will open dialogue between residents and officials who attend while informing anyone who may not have been up-to-speed on what’s going on with the master plan or how recent ARPA funding proposals are being tackled.
“Decisions are being made very quickly,” said Hammond. “The planning commission originally delayed the master plan vote by up to sixty days to allow for more public input- but cut that short. This meeting will give residents a chance to hear how the city has been allocating funds and planning the future, but also give them a chance to learn how they can make an impact of their own.”
In a release put out by CAP prior to the gathering, Bulls said the group has been working with environmental and economic justice coalitions to form better framework proposals for the city to potentially use based on equity.
“We have to have a clear vision that is consistent throughout our city planning processes that puts our community first,” said Bulls. “We’d like to present our findings to the community and invite everyone to participate.”
While inviting concerned residents to speak the event, CAP has also asked State Representative Amos O’Neal, all of Saginaw City Council, and City Manager Tim Morales to attend as well.
In relation to the goal of the meeting, O’Neal released a statement encouraging community unity.
“The community should be informed of and involved in the planning processes,” said O’Neal. “We have a great opportunity to set up Saginaw for success for generations to come. We have federal funding heading towards Michigan, and billions of dollars right now in our state budget, that could be used to improve the opportunities and quality of life for every Saginaw resident.”
Saginaw City Council will be looking to vote on the master plan at their Oct. 10 meeting.
