A familiar name will be suiting up for head coach Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels this season. UNC announced its final roster for the 2022-23 season, featuring walk-on Beau Maye wearing No. 40. Beau is the younger brother of former UNC basketball star Luke and older brother of current UNC quarterback Drake.

Like Luke, Beau Maye went to Hough High School in Huntersville, N.C. (Drake went to Myers Park). Beau put up respectable numbers while playing at Hough, averaging 13.1 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game as a senior in 2020. He was averaging even better scoring numbers as a junior before suffering a knee injury.

Maye is now a junior at UNC, one year older than redshirt freshman Drake. Beau’s No. 40 jersey is a well-known one in Carolina basketball lore; past wearers include Harrison Barnes and Maye’s head coach, Hubert Davis.

Measuring 6-8 and weighing 225 pounds, Maye is listed as a forward on UNC’s official roster. Beau is the third younger brother to follow in his elder sibling’s footsteps on the current Tar Heel team: teammate Puff Johnson is the younger brother of former Carolina star and current Phoenix Suns standout Cameron, and freshman Seth Trimble is the younger brother of J.P. Tokoto, who played for UNC from 2012 through 2015.

The Maye family clearly has athletic blood, as Beau’s father Mark also played quarterback for Carolina in the 1980s and worked as a graduate assistant during head coach Mack Brown’s first stint in Chapel Hill.

Fans can get their first look at Beau Maye and the rest of the Tar Heels during Live Action With Carolina Basketball on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in the Smith Center.
