“I’m not a chef, but I’m a good cook,” musician John Legend tells his wife, TV personality Chrissy Teigen, as the two dig into a sumptuous meal featuring—among other things—corn and French fries with their kids, six-year-old Luna and four-year-old Miles. (The verdict from Luna? “It’s a little spicy.”) The multitalented Legend recently released the impressive double album Legend, but at home, it’s clear that he’s Dad before anything else.
First on Legend’s agenda during the 24 hours Vogue spent with him in Las Vegas? A haircut from his brother Ron, who’s been taking care of his hair for years; once he’s all set, it’s time for a fitting, which doubles as an excuse for Luna to play dress-up. (Legend’s tour outfits, which include lavender shirts, shiny jackets, and Gucci loafers, have to be seen to be believed.)
At lunch with the family, Legend and his loved ones don disposable plastic gloves to enjoy a crawfish feast. “I love recipes that take a really long time; I love braising, I love making things that take three, four, five hours,” says Teigen, with Legend noting that, growing up, he became the cook at home after his parents’ divorce.
After lunch, it’s time to explore Vegas a little bit before Legend stars doing vocal exercises to prepare for his show at the Zappos Theater—and honestly, if you’ve never heard Legend warming up his instrument, I highly recommend the experience. Soon enough, it’s time for the lights-camera-action experience of performing live. “That’s what it’s all about. It’s love in Las Vegas,” says Legend…and really, who could argue with that?
