GIPD arrests three in afternoon standoff incident

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Three people were arrested after a high-risk warrant was served in Grand Island on the north end of town.

It all started when Grand Island Police officers responded to 1215 N. Locust Street in reference to white smoke coming from the back of the residence.

Police made contact with Dulce Renteria who said she was burning excess wire from the house. During the smoke investigation, officers contacted Alejandro Loforte-Escalona, 24, through a window of the residence, learning he had six active Hall County warrants.

Renteria denied that Loforte-Escalona was inside the home and refused to get him.

When officers told her they were going to get a warrant for the residence, she tried to run back into the house. Officers attempted to detain her when they told her to stop, but she pulled away and started to tussle with the officers before she was placed into handcuffs.

Capt. Jim Duering said the the police department’s tactical response team (TRT) was called to the scene because one of the outstanding warrants against Loforte-Escalona was weapons related. Neighbors were warned to shelter in place during the event.

Announcements were made for about one hour asking that occupants inside come out. After chemical irritants were introduced, Gabriel Subit came out.

Eventually the TRT forced entry into the house and arrested Loforte-Escalona without further incident. He was barricaded and hiding inside the attic.

Duering said there was no gunfire during the incident and no one was injured.

Loforte-Escalone was arrested on the six warrants as well as obstructing police. Renteria was arrested for obstructing police, resisting arrest and aiding consummation of a felony while Subit was taken in for obstructing police.
