SFA gardens prepares for fall plant sale

NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) - SFA Gardens is preparing for its big, annual fall plant sale where the community can purchase plants from a selection of over 200 different varieties.

Director for the gardens, Dr. David Creech says a lot of work has gone into preparing for the sale.

“We’ve pulled in about 200 plus different varieties of trees, shrubs, hibiscus perennials, and all of them are pretty much proven performers here in East Texas,” Creech said.

Greenhouse Technician, Jordan Cunningham says the plants you see on the sales floor have been grown and taken care of for about two to three years.

“We are always in preparation for the next sale. A lot of the things you see come from cuttings from our gardens, and we grow them, we do cuttings, we plant them out, they live in the greenhouses, they live in the nursery pads, fertilize them really well, water them really well. Everything it takes to get a beautiful plant to grow,” Cunningham said.

From there, the different plants are measured and checked to make sure they are ready for the sale. Cunningham says they do trials and tests on the plants to ensure they grow well for the average gardener.

“We are really big on supplying things that you may not be able to find at big box stores. We supply plants that grow well in East Texas,” Cunningham said.

Creech says the gardens love being able to provide these plants to the community.

“In terms of advanced genetics, new plant material SFA gardens is really putting it out in the community. We love it because they end up in our local landscapes,” Creech said.

Again, the plant sale begins this weekend October 1 and 2 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
