After the excitement of yesterday’s new single drop of “This Is Why,” Paramore’s first new music in five years, the band is giving fans a look at why they chose to slow things down following the promotion of 2017’s After Laughter.

In a new chat with The Guardian, Paramore singer Hayley Williams explains how the openness of their 2017 After Laughter campaign helped the band to, “more than ever [become] a support system to each other that we desperately needed.”
The decision to take time once the tour ended to focus on much-needed self-reflection, guitarist Taylor York shared, came easy after finding out about the death of a family friend during a video shoot caused him to break down in tears. “I just started bawling,” he admits. “I didn’t know I had this capacity until that moment.”
York adds, “We realised nothing is worth risking our health.”
Williams says the members also used that time to “see what it’s like to not hang our identities on Paramore all the time.” As fans will remember, Hayley dropped her Petals For Armor and Flowers For Vases/Descansos solo offerings during that period, the former produced by York and helped by Paramore drummer Zac Farro on a number of tracks.
York also reveals during the conversation that he decided to give up alcohol at the time as well, in an effort to “explore some deeper parts of myself and figure out why we do this, how it happened.”
“I’m a very introverted person and I have a passion and career that’s at odds with that,” he says. “When it came back to doing [Paramore] again, I was able to say confidently, let’s do it. Zac and Hayley both needed to know that I wanted to do this.” Check out the full discussion HERE.
