WARREN, MI – A major train derailment has created a traffic jam in Warren, mayor Jim Fouts said on Thursday morning.

Residents are being asked to avoid the area of Schoenherr Road and Stephens Road on the city’s southeast side after 12 railroad cars derailed around 7:30 a.m. Fox 2 in Detroit posted drone footage of the wreck.

Railroad cars are stacked up between Bunert Road and 9 Mile, Fouts said. Schoenherr is closed east of 10 Mile and the area of Stephens east of Hoover is closed for the clean up, according to the Michigan State Police.

Three of the 12 derailed cars were tankers cars containing liquid chlorine and unrefined alcohol, but no leak is detected and there is no threat to public safety, Fouts said.

The tracks are destroyed around the area of impact, but no one was injured.

“The tanker cars are upright so no threat to public safety,” Fouts said. “Great quick response by the Warren Fire Department! Again, best fire department in the state and quick to respond. Thanks also to the great leadership of (Fire Commissioner) Skip McAdams.”
