‘Yellowstone’ Season 5 Trailer: Power Has A Price As The Duttons Go To War

We talk about the might of the Taylor Sheridan-verse—the creator/writer/showrunner/sometimes director of “Yellowstone,” the biggest show on cable television—but really, with only three shows on the air currently, “Yellowstone,” its prequel “1883” and “The Mayor Of Kingstown,” a fourth arriving this fall (“Tulsa King”) and several others waiting in the wings, Sheridan’s TV dominance is only really getting started. Will we see it really take off in these last few months of 2022? Well, his flagship show, “Yellowstone,” is back in November on the Paramount Network, and that outta shake the ratings tree again.

What’s happening in season five? Well, the tagline is “Power has a price.” And what are the Duttons willing to pay? Well, that’s really always the central question to this series about power, land grabs, family dynasties, and dysfunction, power struggles, and, well, basically holding on to what you’ve got for as long as you can.

Coming on Sunday, November 13, “Yellowstone” season five promises to be a big one, and the season will kick off with a two-hour premiere even on that day (two full episodes). In case you’re living under a rock—and you’ll be excused if you do as “Yellowstone” only seemed to catch on with media outside the heartland last season—“Yellowstone” is a drama series that follows the Dutton family, led by patriarch John Dutton (Kevin Costner). The Duttons control the largest contiguous ranch in the U.S. and must contend with constant attacks by land developers, clashes with an Indian reservation, and conflict with America’s first national park.

The show has become star-studded or at least made big names out of actors like Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Cole Hauser, and Kelsey Asbille.

The ensemble series also stars Brecken Merrill, Forrie Smith, Denim Richards, Ian Bohen, Finn Little, Ryan Bingham, and Gil Birmingham, with Mo Brings Plenty, Wendy Moniz, Jen Landon, and Kathryn Kelly upped to series regulars. The upcoming fifth season will also feature the return of Josh Lucas as young John Dutton—yes, flashbacks to the past— alongside Jacki Weaver, Kylie Rogers, and Kyle Red Silverstein, with Kai Caster, Lainey Wilson, Lilli Kay, and Dawn Olivieri joining the all-star cast.

Earlier this year, it was promised that “Yellowstone” season five would be broken into two parts. While Paramount does not mention that in their new trailer, we’ll have to wait and see if that deal holds.

What’s to expect for season five? Well, the new trailer opens with John Dutton (Costner) being sworn in as Governor of Montana and shows the chaos, enemies, and “war” that immediately follow. Paramount Network’s “Yellowstone” season four premiere was cable’s highest-rated show, bringing in over 14 million viewers total, and they surely have high hopes that they can top those figures again. How long can “Yellowstone” last? Well, given that it just got its first SAG award last year—its first significant critical acknowledgment, who knows, maybe it’s just getting started.
