Authorities say a man and his three dogs were struck by a vehicle and killed early Thursday morning while walking in downtown Los Angeles.
The collision occurred near the intersection of West 5th Street and South Hill Street just before 12:30 a.m.
The unidentified victim and his dogs were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police initially indicated that two dogs were killed but later updated the information.
The driver of the silver SUV tried to flee but crashed into several parked cars near 7th Street and Hill, police said.
KTLA viewer William Coppola captured video of the immediate aftermath of the collision when the suspect was confronted by LAPD officers.
Video shows the driver reach into his pockets repeatedly and moving aggressively toward the officers, who back away. Eventually, one officer fires a stun gun at the suspect, dropping him to the ground temporarily.
The suspect gets up and tries to run away, and appears to throw something at one of the officers. Seconds later, the officer uses his baton to finally take down the suspect.
Police have not confirmed if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
