From Jimmie Athletics

The University of Jamestown baseball team jumped out to a double-digit lead Wednesday evening at Jack Brown Stadium, then had to hold off a rally by the Dickinson State (N.D.) University Blue Hawks in a 13-10 victory.

Jamestown put up six runs and chased DSU starting pitcher Moses Dokes (0-1) after just one-third of an inning. Triston Madison (SO/Post Falls, ID) and Hayden Brown (JR/Buckeye, AZ) each had two-run doubles, Trent Peters (SO/Niverville, MB, Canada) singled in another run, and Kendall Yackley (SR/Lynnwood, WA) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

After Blue Hawk reliever Alberto Nieto got the final two outs in the first, the Jimmies struck for five runs against the right-hander in the second. Madison launched a two-run homer while Payton Smith (SO/Snohomish, WA) and Jordan Singleton (SO/East Wenatchee, WA) both drove in runs with doubles. Yackley also drove in another run and UJ was in control at 11-0.

DSU got on the board against Jamestown starter Connor Nipp (SO/Newburg, OR) in the top of the third, with Jacob Clinton’s two-run homer the big blow of the inning. Following their three-run third, the Blue Hawks tacked on four more in the fourth, including a three-run home run by Dawson Cortese that cut the Jimmie lead to 11-7.

UJ got one run back in the sixth as Alex Alva (SO/Littleton, CO) scored on a wild pitch, only to have the Blue Hawks answer with a pair of runs in the seventh. Alex Tolbert (SO/Santa Clara, CA) smashed a pinch-hit home run leading off the bottom of the seventh to make it 13-9 going into the eighth.

A run in the eighth by Dickinson State made it a three-run game, and despite getting two runners on in the bottom of the eighth, the Jimmies took a 13-10 into the ninth.

Ethan Krupp (SO/Corvallis, OR) started the ninth on the mound for UJ and gave up back-to-back singles as the Blue Hawks had runners at first and second with no out. Yackley moved from shortstop to pitcher and retired the final three batters, two by strikeout, to earn the save.

Luke Zimmer (FR/Velva, ND) (2-0), the first of seven Jimmie relievers, struck out two in 1 2/3 innings to get the win. Nipp, making his second start of the fall, lasted 3 1/3 innings, giving up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits, walking three and striking out two.

Madison and Brown had two-hit games for Jamestown, and seven other Jimmies had hits. Madison finished with four runs batted in while Brown and Yackley each drove in two.

UJ (4-1) hosts Valley City State (N.D.) Monday at Jack Brown Stadium with first pitch set for 5 p.m.
