VOLUSIA COUNTY. IT LOOKS LIKE THINGS ARE SETTLING DOWN. MARLEI: FLOODING IS A MAJOR CONCERN IN ASTOR. WE JUST SPOKE WITH LAKE COUNTY OFFICIALS AND THEY HAD TO HELP 10 FAMILIES FIND SAFER SHELTER LAST NIGHT BECAUSE OF THE RAPID FLOODING. THIS HAPPENS A WE ARE UP RIVER ON A SIDE STREET AND THE COUNTY SAYS THIS WAS A PREVENTATIVE MEASURE BECAUSE THE RIVER IS ALREADY AT MODERATE FLOOD STAGE. LOOK AT ALL OF THE RAIN COMING DOWN. YOU CAN SEE THE WIND GUSTS AS WELL, BUT THE MAIN STORY IS LETTING -- FLOODING. THE ST. JOHNS RIVER HAS ALREADY SWELLED OVER HALF A FOOT AND IF IT GOES UP MORE, WE ENTER MAJOR FLOOD STAGES. ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IS, THAT MEANS FLOODING OF HOMES AND BUSINESSES ALONG THE RIVER. TAKE A LOOK AT THIS VIDEO I SHOT YESTERDAY EVENING OF A 10 FOOT ALLIGATOR. YESTERDAY MORNING, LAKE COUNTY’S FIRE CHIEF CAUTIONED PEOPLE ABOUT THIS. HE SAID BECAUSE OF HIGH FLOODWATERS IN ASTOR, LAKE COUNTY SEES ALLIGATORS AND SNAKES COME OUT OF THE SWAMPS. THE COUNTY ALSO TELLS ME THAT THEY ENCOURAGE THE HOUSEHOLDS ON THAT SIDE STREET TO LEAVE, BUT THOSE FOLKS CHOSE TO STAY AND THE CONCERN IS THAT THE COUNTY SAYS THEY MAY NOT BE ABLE TO GET EMERGENCY

Flooding is a major concern in Astor. WESH 2 spoke with Lake County officials, and they say they had to help ten families find safer shelter because of the rapid flooding. It happened upriver on a side street called Tarragona Way, and the county says it was a preventative measure because the river was at moderate flood stage. Since Wednesday, the St. John's River has already swelled over half a foot, and if it goes up half a foot more, the county would enter major flood stages. According to the National Weather Service, that could mean flooding in many homes and businesses along the river. There are other concerns in the county too. Wednesday evening, a nearly 10-foot alligator was seen in the St. John's River. On Wednesday morning, Lake County's fire chief cautioned people about it.He said because of high flood waters in Astor, Lake County sees alligators and snakes come out of the swamps that they don't normally see. The county also told WESH they encouraged two more households on a nearby side street to leave, but those people chose to stay.Now the concern, according to the county, is they may not be able to get emergency crews out there because of the rising waters.
