Lake County helps 10 families find safer shelter amid rapid flooding in river
Flooding is a major concern in Astor.
WESH 2 spoke with Lake County officials, and they say they had to help ten families find safer shelter because of the rapid flooding.
It happened upriver on a side street called Tarragona Way, and the county says it was a preventative measure because the river was at moderate flood stage.
Since Wednesday, the St. John's River has already swelled over half a foot, and if it goes up half a foot more, the county would enter major flood stages.
According to the National Weather Service, that could mean flooding in many homes and businesses along the river.
There are other concerns in the county too.
Wednesday evening, a nearly 10-foot alligator was seen in the St. John's River.
On Wednesday morning, Lake County's fire chief cautioned people about it.
He said because of high flood waters in Astor, Lake County sees alligators and snakes come out of the swamps that they don't normally see.
The county also told WESH they encouraged two more households on a nearby side street to leave, but those people chose to stay.
Now the concern, according to the county, is they may not be able to get emergency crews out there because of the rising waters.
