RISON - What a difference having some film on the opponent can make.
Woodlawn went into its season opener at Parkers Chapel back on Sept. 2 with nothing more than about 15 seconds of YouTube video to work with. The Bears got down early but battled back for a 42-28 victory over the Trojans.
When the two teams met for the second time this past Friday night at the Carl Jones Sports Complex, Woodlawn had plenty to work with this time and die results were a lot different as die Rears rolled to a 44-8 win, invoking the sportsmanship rule by halftime.
'We actually had a little film on them this time, you know, and got to sec them so we could prepare a whole lot better,” Woodlawn Coach Zach Meyer said after the game. “We made some adjustments (from the first meeting) and I think those adjustments really helped out.”
Woodlawn, which rolled up more than 400 yards on the ground in (he first game against PC, didn’t need nearly as much offense this second time around as the defense kept the Trojans contained for most of the game and the Bears were in control by the half.
Woodlawn had three running backs - Fisher Hale, Caleb Martin and Jaxson Marlin - rush for more 100 yards apiece in the first game. This time, however, not one Bear broke the century mark as the running clock over the final two quarters limited offensive plays for both teams plus one big run from Hale was wiped out by penalty.
Woodlawn entered (he game off a bye week and the offense sputtered a bit out of the gate, being forced to punt after picking up one first down near midfield on the opening series. The Bears ended up scoring on their next six possessions.
“Coming off a bye week, you’re always worried about being rusty and making mistakes. I thought we came out well, especially there in the first quarter,” Meyer said. “We really ran hard, and we came out like I thought we should come out.”
