Tech sweeps K-State, extends win streak to 4

Kenna Sauer recorded 16 kills and Texas Tech won its Big 12 volleyball home opener Wednesday night, beating Kansas State 25-22, 25-23, 25-15 at United Supermarkets Arena.

Tech (13-2, 2-0) won its fourth match in a row and snapped a five-match losing streak in the series with Kansas State (9-6, 0-2). The Red Raiders host No. 1 Texas (10-0, 2-0) at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Tech setter Reese Rhodes ran the offense with 35 assists and had 16 digs, tying her career high. Brooke Kanas hit .400 with eight kills, adding a team-high six blocks. Reagan Cooper had eight kills, four digs and a block.

Elena Baka and Shaylee Myers led Kansas State with 12 and 10 kills, respectively, and Loren Hinkle had 29 assists.

Cross country

Texas Tech teams will be in South Bend, Indiana, on Friday to compete in the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational.

Select members of the Tech men's team are entered in the open division 5-mile run scheduled for 11:45 a.m. CDT, and others are entered in the gold division 5-mile that starts at 1:15 p.m. CDT. The Tech women's contingent will run in the gold division 5-kilometer race at 12:30 p.m. CDT.

Two weeks ago in the Tech Open, Edward Rush led the Red Raider men with a fourth-place finish individually and Halena Rahmaan placed 13th in the women's division.

General sports

Texas Tech has put tickets on sale for its annual Tech Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony scheduled for Oct. 28 at the Overton Hotel and Conference Center. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the program is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Tickets are priced at $25 individually and $200 for a table of 10.

Tommy McVay, the late director of operations for the Red Raiders' football program, will be inducted into the Tech Athletics Hall of Honor. The Hall of Fame honorees include Kevin Curtis (football), Oscar Floren (golf), Gene Knolle (basketball), Norman Reuther (basketball), Matt Miller (baseball), Patience Knight (track and field) and Chris Martin (volleyball).

The following day, Tech will induct Patrick Mahomes into the Tech Athletics Hall of Fame and Tech football Ring of Honor, both during an on-field ceremony at the Tech-Baylor football game at Jones AT&T Stadium. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is able to attend because his NFL team has an open date that weekend.
