How to get speed humps in your neighborhood
If you live in a Los Angeles neighborhood that gets a lot of traffic you can once again apply for a speed hump to be installed.
Speed humps are an effective tool to slow down car speeding through neighborhoods, something West Adams resident Manuel Castenada knows much about.
"It was crazy. People drove like 60 mph," he said.
Castenada was one of the LA residents that applied for speed humps before the program was paused over two years ago after the city decided to focus more on the pandemic. However, with the program now back Castenada woke up to see a newly installed hump in his neighborhood.
"I think it's great because people don't drive too fast as before," he said. "I'm very happy."
Pre-pandemic the program added about 260 humps a year.
"We are so excited to bring back our speed hump program after 2.5-year hiatus," said Connie Llanos, chief of staff and strategy at the Los Angeles Department of Transportation. "We were able to secure some additional resources from our mayor and city council... so We have double our resources for the program and we're super excited to reopen the application for all Angelenos.
With more resources than before the pandemic, the budget for the hump program has doubled to $2 million.
"Speed humps are one of the most reliable tools in our toolbox to ensure we can control speeds and make our streets safer," said
Authorities will consider the speed limit, a street's incline as well as the width and drainage when deciding on where humps should go.
More than 800-speed humps were installed across the city between 2017 and 2020.
