An East Syracuse Minoa high school student has been arrested in connection to a school shooting threat posted over the weekend.
Manlius police say they were made aware of the social media threat on Sunday. They say it was originally texted to a student who then took a screenshot and posted it online. The school district held classes remotely on Monday and returned to in-person learning on Tuesday.
A notification was made to the Federal Bureau of Investigation field office in Syracuse as well as the New York State Police Criminal Intelligence Unit.
Police say they knew the number that the threat came from was not a legitimate phone number. They say they used advanced software, and investigative techniques, and were able to urgently request business records in order to identify the student to be held responsible.
The student admitted to creating the threat and was charged with Making a Terroristic Threat and Making a Threat of Mass Harm.
Police say that due to the racist sentiment contained in the text message, the terroristic threat will also be considered a hate crime in court.
