Charlie Blackmon's season is done.

The Rockies leader has a torn meniscus in his left knee and was placed on the injured list on Wednesday. The injury happened last week after hitting the bag, and he thought it was a one time thing. He tried to play through it — including getting two hits and a RBI on Tuesday as the Rockies started a three-game series in San Francisco — but was unable to continue.

He'll get surgery on Monday in Denver by Dr. Thomas Noonan and is expected to be fully recovered by spring training, although it may impact some of his offseason fishing and camping trips he had planned. Blackmon had the same surgery on his right knee earlier in his career.

"He's bummed," manager Bud Black told reporters. "I think every player wants to finish the season on the field and healthy. Charlie sets such a standard for durability. ... He wants to play.  No matter the circumstance, Charlie is a competitor. He wants to be on the field, he likes to play. This is a bummer."

Blackmon has a $18 million player option for the 2023 season, and he has indicated that he intends to utilize that. He finished the 2022 season with a .264 batting average and 16 home runs.

Sean Bouchard impressing

Bouchard was given a quick glance in June, but an oblique strain sent him almost immediately to the injured list. He's getting another chance this month, and he hasn't disappointed.

He's started the last seven games, going 8 for 16 with 10 walks, including two on Wednesday. He's one is one of seven position players in franchise history to post an OBP over .725 over a six-game span, and, entering Wednesday's slate of games, his .509 OBP since Aug. 30 ranks second in the Majors behind only Aaron Judge. Never a bad thing to be in the same sentence as a guy who hit his 61st home run of the season.

This stretch may just put the rookie in contention for a roster spot next spring. A healthy Kris Bryant will take over the starting left field spot, but there could be room on the bench for Bouchard. His biggest competition is Connor Joe, who has only played in seven games this month.

Still time for Rodgers

The Rockies aren't ruling out a return for Brendan Rodgers yet.

With seven games to go, there's still a chance that Rodgers, on the injured list with a hamstring ailment, could make his way back to the field. He went through a full slate of activities on Tuesday, and is eligible to return as early as Thursday. The more likely scenario is that he will return at some point during the Rockies six-game series in Los Angelos, which begins on Friday.
