MACON, Ga. (WGXA) -- With Hurricane Ian quickly approaching, the Macon Water Authority is taking action to prevent flooding.
"Prepared as we can be," says Macon Water Authority Stormwater Manager Marvin Land. "You never know what might happen and we're tracking the storm to see the path, to prepare for what we need to do."
Preparation for incoming Hurricane Ian is top priority for Land.
"We're cleaning out the storm pipes along with the catch basins and detention ponds," Land says. "Just making sure everything is open and free-flowing because that's what causes flooding upstream and causes public roadways to be flooded any time we get a blockage."
Middle Georgia is expecting three to six inches of rain from Hurricane Ian. Land says there are plans in place if flooding does occur.
"We have people on standby," he explains. "On call, prepared to go out and handle anything that comes up. It's going to be more reactive. All we can do is make sure what we know of is open and free-flowing."
Due to the amount of flooding that occurred on Zebulon Road during Labor Day Weekend, Land says they know where some of the hot spots are.
While teams work to control flooding if it happens, Land wants the public to remember to steer clear of problem areas.
"If you come across a flooded street, please do not try to drive through it because you do not know how deep the water is," he says.
The Macon Water Authority is urging people not to litter in order to prevent stormwater drains from getting clogged.
