A former superintendent of a closed Oklahoma City charter school has been charged with embezzling school funds.
Janet Grigg is facing multiple counts of embezzlement and stolen property.
From the court documents, KOCO 5 found Grigg is being charged as a felon with four counts of embezzling public money, public property and concealing stolen property. The Oklahoma state auditor found Grigg allegedly stole $250,000 of taxpayer money, as well as an SUV and school computers.
Griff was the former superintendent of Justice Alma Wilson SeeWorth Academy in OKC. The school was known for serving children in the OKC area impacted by the criminal justice system but officially closed in June of 2019.
KOCO 5 reached out to the state auditor to learn more about how they found evidence supporting these embezzlement allegations.
State Auditor Cindy Byrd responded with a statement that said, “The SAI only audits school districts by request if there appears to be a problem. SeeWorth Academy was investigated because there was not a proper accounting of the finances. Based on our audit findings, today’s events emphasize the importance that the taking and spending of our education dollars must be done with accountability and transparency.”
KOCO 5 reached out to District Attorney David Prater but has not heard back. The investigation is still ongoing.
