MIAMI - Police said a person in custody after gunfire rang out Wednesday afternoon at a Walmart in Southwest Miami-Dade County has been charged.

Police were called to the store located at SW 211 Street and Dixie Highway around 3:30 p.m. on a report of gunfire, officials said in an email statement.

CBS4 has learned that an altercation between two males led to both opening fire.

One was taken to a local hospital where he later died. The other fled and was later apprehended. The 16-year-old has been charged with second degree murder.

"This happened in a supermarket, where people were shopping and getting things done. Other people could have been hurt. Fortunately, that was not the case,"  said MDPD detective Luis Sierra.

CBS4's Peter D'Oench also spoke with another man who was inside the Walmart.

Danny Rizzo said, "I was there with my wife and son. When I heard the shots I grabbed my son and took off. I told someone outside to look after my son. I need to go back inside for my wife. I tried, but police would not let me get back inside."

Rizzo said his wife was able to get out of the store safely.

Lilly Sorzano was with her mother inside the store and said there were some terrifying moments.

"I heard shots. Just like 2 or 3 and then all of a sudden, we ran and heard 8 more and then like 5 more. We were trying to hide somewhere. But we were so nervous. I just kept walking and walking somewhere and then we got out and there was a door and we got out," said Sorzano.

"My mom couldn't walk. I thought we were going to die right there."

"All I wanted to do was get out."

Miami-dade police say a firearm was recovered.

Detective Sierra could not say if the two males knew each other.
