Mary Alice Reporting –

A Wednesday morning incident involving a domestic situation turned fatal for the suspect.

Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis Campbell explains that the 911 call came in at 9:25am from a Mineral City woman.

He says that deputies were nearby so they arrived on scene, to the small fenced-in backyard, by 9:33am.

“The woman was stating that her ex was outside of her home and she was hiding in the home and that the [woman] had a protection order. The individual is not permitted to be there. The Protection Order prohibits that clearly.”

The protection order was issued roughly a week ago and at that time, weapons were seized.

Campbell adds that deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation by talking with the man for about 20 minutes as the suspect made comments that were suicidal in nature and that he had a knife.

He turned and ran and tried to get into the home. Once deputies shot him with a less lethal beanbag round, cause he knew the woman was in there hiding so we didn’t want him in there with her. The beanbag round was ineffective. In fact, as the deputy described it, it virtually had no effect on him. The individual immediately turned with a gun and fired off a couple of rounds toward deputies. Two deputies returned fire, killing the individual there on scene.”

Deputies did not suffer any physical injuries.

With it being an officer-involved shooting, Campbell points out that Ohio BCI will handle the investigation and the two deputies who fired rounds are on administrative leave, per protocol.

“They were requested to come to the scene to do a complete crime scene investigation. I was not there when this took place. I talked to several of the people who were there and it appears, initially, that our deputies acted in the only way that they could. They were not required to try to use that less lethal round. I think they responded in the only way that most people could expect.”

The suspect’s name is being withheld pending a review from the Tuscarawas County Coroner’s Office.
