Signs of a new airport terminal are more prominent now than at any other time since the Allegheny County Airport Authority announced plans for the new facility in Findlay Township.
Bridge columns for a three-deck bridge structure and the first section of the terminal's steel frame are in place.
"We have a bridge structure that's 1,300 feet long," Chief Development Officer Paul Hoback said. "That's longer than the Fort Pitt Bridge."
A new roadway will be installed at the current airport entrance, taking traffic to the three-deck bridge — departure traffic for the upper deck, arrivals for the second deck and ground transportation for the lower deck.
Additional sections of the terminal's steel frame will be added to the first piece, which is connected to the airside terminal between concourses C and D.
From there, the new terminal will connect with the bridge.
Allegheny County Airport Authority CEO Christina Cassotis said 80 percent of the engineering and construction workforce is based in Pittsburgh.
"It's really important to us," Cassotis said. "We really want to make sure that the people who built it are the people who are going to live with it, fly through it, and be proud of it for years to come."
Hoback said 70 percent of the foundation is laid for the $1.4 billion project, and it is on budget and on time to open in 2025.
