The Carson Wentz hype train left the station when he was in Philadelphia and it’s been derailed ever since. The 29-year-old quarterback is now with his third team in as many seasons, and he’s not exactly finding success.
Wentz was sacked nine times by his former team in the Eagles’ 24-8 win in Washington on Sunday. He started out the season strong with seven touchdown passes and a total of 650 yards in the Commanders’ first two games, but he couldn’t get anything going against Philadelphia.
Hall of Fame wide receiver Terrell Owens joined Josina Anderson and Fred Smoot on the Audacy Original Podcast “The Crew” and had some harsh words about Wentz.
“This is what we get from Carson Wentz. We probably have seen the best of Carson Wentz when he was with the Philadelphia Eagles. That’s just the honesty and the reality of it,” Owens said (21:20 in player above). “Every stop that he’s been, you’ve seen glimpses of what he could be but there’s no consistency. And I think we all can agree with that with his play. No matter how good of a God-given talent he has, it’s not showing up on game day, on Sundays the way it should be.”
Wentz has never been able to put it all together after being selected second overall in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Eagles. Philadelphia traded him to Indianapolis in March of 2021, and the Colts moved him to the Commanders this past March.
Nevertheless, Smoot believes in Wentz.
“I believe in Carson Wentz,” he said. “I believe when a player is not loved, Philly don’t love nobody, the coach don’t love nobody, and now we loving on Carson,” Smoot said, much to Owens’ confusion.
Adam Schefter reported on Sunday that Jimmy Garoppolo’s shoulder surgery disrupted an offseason trade with the Commanders, prior to their acquisition of Wentz.
That report was quickly dismissed by Commanders head coach Ron Rivera, which Smoot reiterated.
“That’s a lie. Coach Rivera cleared that up,” Smoot said. “Rivera kept it 100, saying it was a damn lie. They only want to talk about this now because Garoppolo gotta be their quarterback so they gotta make sure their ex-girlfriend feels like she’s wanted… They’re trying to say we wanted Jimmy first instead of Carson.”
Perhaps trading for Garoppolo instead of Wentz wouldn’t have been the worst thing in the world.
“Y’all would’ve been better off with Jimmy Garoppolo, to be quite honest,” Owens said. “I don’t understand why you feel like Carson Wentz is the answer. Carson Wentz hasn’t been the answer in either of the last two or three stops that he’s been. I get you were employed once by the Washington franchise organization, but you’re being political with the stiff answers right about now.”
