Byram man pleads guilty to meth charges, sentenced to federal prison
A Byram man has been sentenced to federal prison after pleading guilty to drug charges. Dave Venard Thompson, 41, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Jackson to 115 months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release. Thompson pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, federal prosecutors said.The case was part of a 2018 FBI investigation into the distribution of methamphetamine, heroin, marijuana and cocaine. Agents got a tip about two California men in a black Dodge Ram pickup truck in the metro area who had been picking up illegal narcotics, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office. FBI agents placed the truck under surveillance and, on March 9, 2018, saw someone from inside the truck deliver a package to the U.S. Post Office in Jackson. Three days later, local law enforcement stopped the truck and found nearly $20,000 in cash hidden in the truck."The postal package that was seized by the postal inspector contained almost 1 kilogram of heroin and 1 kilogram of fentanyl," federal officials said in the release.Thompson was indicted by a federal grand jury and subsequently pled guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.
