SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – An over 13-hour long police standoff in Pleasant Hill has concluded after a rape suspect was found barricaded inside a Nordstrom Rack.

For more, stream KCBS Radio now.

The saga started on Tuesday night when a man wanted for rape fled from authorities and crashed his car near the Sunvalley Mall and subsequently ran into the Nordstrom Rack across the street.

Shoppers were immediately evacuated from both the clothing store and the Safeway next door.

Pleasant Hill Police Captain Scott Vermillion said surveillance video from inside the Nordstrom Rack shows the suspect climbing into the crawl space of the business.

"That created a logistical problem for us to search it effectively and safely," he said. "There's also a possibility that after he crawled up there he may have changed clothing... and walked out with customers in the initial chaos."

SWAT teams could be seen on Wednesday morning attempting to access that crawl space.

Vermillion added that the video also shows the suspect, who has not been identified, shedding some of his own clothing inside the store which suggested he changed clothes and was able to flee unnoticed. However, the suspect was found and arrested just before 12 p.m. still in the Nordstrom, KNTV reported.

Both the Nordstrom Rack and Safeway are expected to reopen shortly.
