(WWJ) - Two cities in Southeast Michigan earned top rankings for being the best towns to raise children and care for aging parents in Fortune's Best Places to Live for Families in 2022, the publication released on Wednesday.

Ann Arbor claimed the number one spot on the list, outranking hometowns like Wylie, Texas, Olathe, Kan., Mason, Ohio and Morrisville, N.C., who rounded out the Top 5 respectively.

Fortune said the rankings took into consideration the "right mix" of factors that meet the needs of families that juggle raising growing kids and providing quality care for older parents.

"With their needs in mind, Fortune put extra emphasis on factors that met the unique challenges of this cohort — such as the quality of local school districts, graduation rates, nearby college affordability, the number of quality nursing homes, assisted living communities, home health care agencies, risk of social isolation among older residents, and access to solid health care providers," the publication said in a prepared statement.

Ann Arbor earned top marks across the board, with the publication placing a large emphasis on the accessibility and quality of health and education in the midsize community.

Many people recognize the nationally ranked University of Michigan, a top-tier school that calls Tree Town home and K-12 schools in the city rank well above average.

"The proximity to the university also delivers a big wellness benefit, with the University of Michigan’s health system and academic medical center earning top marks for patient safety since 2012—one of only 23 U.S. hospitals to do so," Fortune added.

There's also no shortage of activities for families, the rankings show. A variety of concerts, parades and festivals regularly fan out across the city. Ann Arbor's annual Art Fair draws about half a million people to the city each summer and  Ann Arbor Film Festival draws in a number of cinematic fans each spring.

Residents also have their pick of over 160 parks, the Nichols Arboretum, and the Huron River, as well as highly walkable areas like Main and State Streets. There is also a thriving LGBTQ community and annual Pride weekend.

Novi, Mich. earned its own honor and rounded out the Top 10 cities on the list.

Ranked #10, this Metro Detroit city offers a more suburban reprieve from city life, officials said, but still within a 30 minute drive from Detroit. Located close to multiple lakes and trails, families can choose multiple areas to hike, picnic, swim and more.

"Novi has a host of resources for aging adults, including top-rated assisted living and nursing homes, and a seniors activity center that provides exercise classes, social activities, and travel opportunities," Fortune highlighted in its rankings.

People living in the Novi are have access to quality doctors and specialists, the publication said. Even the local hospital, Ascension Providence Hospital – Novi Campus, has been nationally ranked as one of America’s top 50 hospitals for the second year in a row.

The Novi public high school received the Great Schools College Success Award for five years in a row, "recognizing how well it prepares students for higher education," Fortune said. The other public schools in the area rank above average.

Fortune analyzed more than 215,000 data points for nearly 2,000 cities and towns across the U.S. to come up with its Top 25 cities.
