NFA field hockey tops Waterford for season's first win: Tuesday's top plays in HS sports

The Norwich Free Academy field hockey team defeated Waterford, 4-2, to earn its first win of the season.

“It feels great to finally get our first win of the season after being so close with a couple overtime losses,” NFA coach Noel Houle said.

Here are Tuesday's top performances.

Field hockey

Julia Barry, NFA: Senior had a goal and two assists as the Wildcats (1-3-0-2) captured their first win of the season with a 4-2 victory over Woodstock Academy.

Alice Rourke, NFA: Junior had a goal and an assist in the Wildcats’ 4-2 win over Woodstock Academy.

Aila Gutierrez, Killingly: Senior scored three goals, including the game-winning score in overtime, to lift Killingly (4-1) past Waterford, 3-2.

Boys soccer

Louis Hawkins, NFA: Junior scored the game-winning goal early in the second half as the Wildcats (3-2-1) edged Ledyard, 2-1.

Jayden Lyons, Plainfield: Senior converted a penalty kick with three minutes left in regulation to lift the Panthers (2-4) to a 2-1 victory over Griswold.

Jose Calle, Plainfield: Sophomore scored in the first half off on a corner kick in the Panthers’ 2-1 win against Griswold. 

Cody Cramer and Cameron Fulone, Ellis Tech: Junior duo netted two goals apiece as the Golden Eagles (3-1-1) defeated Tourtellotte, 6-0.

Girls soccer

Victoria Iozzi, Ellis Tech: Junior had the lone goal in the Golden Eagles’ 5-1 loss against Tourtellotte.

Girls volleyball 

Hailey Merritt, Killingly: Senior had nine blocks and seven kills but Killingly (2-5) fell short against Plainfield, 3-2.

Chloe Yip, Killingly: Junior had 11 digs and 10 aces in Killingly’s 25-8, 25-18, 19-25, 23-25, 15-12 loss against Plainfield.

Boys cross country

Brady Nottage and Tyler Parmentier, Ellis Tech: Golden Eagles duo finished first (20:01) and second (20:27) in a 20-44 win against Vinal Tech.
